The Netherfield Party by Mentacle The Netherfield Party by Mentacle
Pride and Prejudice- the Netherfield party

Darcy from a remarkably similar angle as the previous page. D'oh!
The Netherfielders entering the Merryton Assmebly. From left to right: Mr. Charles Bingley, Caroline Bingley, Mrs. and Mr. Hurst, and Mr. Darcy. Again...ugh I feel like I;m gonna get creamed over this. When I signed up for this project, I had no idea that Pride and Prejudice has such a huge fanbase- it puts eveyr other fandom I've seen to absolute shame. Think Transformers has a very demanding fanbase? Hah- wait until you sattend a gathering of hardcore Austenites. I found out the hard way because my landlady at the time was one. I lheard more about Regency England than I could ever remember.
I've been watching several versions of Pride and Prejudice, as well as Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park, I bought Regency House Party from PBS videos, and I've started reading Persuasion ( might have to download that too if I can't find the DVD here). With all this research it's still hugely difficult to place myself in that setting. My comic, unfortunately, will not be 100% accurate, but hopefully I'll get the Austen "flavor" right...

I keep putting it off but I MUST comission a Regency-style dress so I can cosplay as Charlotte Lucas!!! Just a simple white muslin gown should do it. And a lacey bonnet is an absolute must!!!

Well, I hope the project goes through as planned. I love your work- I've seen P & P done pretty badly, fairly often, but your comic version is awesome. Your character design, costumes, decor &etc, are true to the novel without being stuffy, and your inking and designs are fabulous. Darcy is gorgeous and moody, without seeming like a pill, and Bingley is adorable without being a twit. Have you heard anything more from Tokyopop?

Unfortunately, it's been cancelled. I'm tryin to revive it somewhere else.

That's so sad! Austen is such a big seller right now too... did they give you a reason for the cancellation?
Mentacle Featured By Owner Nov 1, 2008
Nope, they didn't even tell me. I just learned from my agent after several months of them stonewalling me :(

That's truly sucky. I hope the project can be resuscitated somewhere else- your art deserves it.

I just friended you. If you don't mind, I'd love to hear what you think of my own work. :)

I wish you'd do more of these.

I've got more pages- about up to 140 now- but the book's publisher, Tokyopop, has run into some restructuring problems. Lots of their non-Japanese stuff is being cancelled or reserved for online publication. I'm still waiting for confirmation on their plans for Pride and Prejudice, but if they decide to continue publishing ( and paying me!) I'd be more than glad to post them. Thanks!

The fanbase for the book is rather scary... a couple people I know are crazy for the book as well as other jane austin or bronte and such books. I haven't ever read them but I feel like I should.

Man, I love the way you've drawn Mr. Darcy tho. He looks great. :3 My friend on lj here: [link] tends to have a lot of fashion information from that era... My thing's more mid to late victorian, so I'm not that much help. I might have some of the fashions from that era in my files if that would help. Unfortunately finding settings information is harder. =u= sorry I'm rambling.

I really like how their hair turned out and I like the expression on the powdered (?) haired guy way in the back.
